pearl Buck in her 1970 novel MANDALA, describes the scent of tuberoses in a scene on the maharani's terrace at night. A small group of thevmain characters is looking out at the Maharaja of Rajput's lake with its delicately designed white palace in the middle. There are huge ancestral crocodiles breeding in the lake. During the day, women beat their clothes on steps avross the way. Fishermen venture forth on long narrow boats, casting round nets out in front. The palace truly exists. it is a hotel now. It has been used for movies such as the James Bond movie, Octopussy. A lovely construction. As I read, I felt a need to be on that balcony, to experience that moment. Vicariously would not do. I looked up tuberoses. They are best grown in hardiness zones 8-10, a tropical plant. Their perfume is said to be more powerful at night. They are perennials. The lure of their perfume is legendary. I needed to do more than gaze at their blossoms. I needed to experience, as did the guests on that terrace, that heady lingering scent, sweet like lily-of-the-valley. In Northern New England the flowers would have to be grown indoors or planted in the spring and dug up in the fall. I ordered some bulbs to be delivered next spring. Still, that did not satisfy me. Aha! Tuberose oil! I found a small vial on sale for three dollars plus minimum shipping and tax. It came in two days! One sniff and I was there, on that terrace, in that night, with the maharani and her guests, her tuberoses, the shimmering lake, the moonlit white palace, ah.......... Now, I can go there whenever I want. A drop or two in my bathwater and the New England chill disappears. The scent surprises me, too. I get in my car, wrapped in my wooly coat, and the warm scent of tuberoses wafts up to me from my warm body. I bought this to add to some bath scrubs and bath salts. It's such a wonderful scent, I mixed it with vanilla and a carrier oil for a perfume. This tuberose is one of the best scents I have ever tried. I’ve always been drawn to tuberose and this does not disappoint! It smells fresh and quite sensual! It also has the right strength not too strong and not too subtle. It is perfect perfume to wear on its own, just add a few drops to a carrier oil. I have also made a perfume with raspberry, this Tuberose, vanilla and patchouli and it smells heavenly.This tuberose is one of the best scents I have ever tried. I love the smell of the Tuberose flower and although this really doesn't smell like the flower, it is still a great fragrance. I've not been able to find anything that is comparable to the real thing. This is a good size for the price. A little bit of tuberose goes a long way.
I just bought this oil and opened it up and smelled it and I'll tell you it is strong, kind of sweet and musky-what I would consider a lower note on the fragrance scale. I plan to mix it with some other musky scents I also ordered. I think it would be good to mix in a carrier liquid to spray on the skin. I wish piping rock would sell a liquid to mix with the essential oils so I could make my own perfumes that are lighter even then putting them on my wrists.
